| The beach of
Naxos Agios Georgios |
| |
Naxos Agios Georgios is one of the most popular resorts on Naxos Island. Naxos, a famous tourist destination in Greece, is the biggest island in the Cyclades island group in the Aegean region.
Agios Georgios beach is one of the most stunning along the southwest coast of Naxos and is just 300m from Hora or the Naxos town as it is sometimes called.
It is one of the most pleasant areas on the island of Naxos and is well sheltered from the very forceful winds that blow. The landscape is picturesque and the atmosphere here is tranquil.
Agios Georgios also known as St. George Beach, is a family beach. The beach with its deep, clean and soft sands that slope gently into the sea and waters that are translucent and shallow is safe for children to wallow in.
The popularity of the place has brought in its wake a spate of construction activities with the building of hotels and tourist infrastructure on the rise. Despite the development activities Agios Georgios still retains its old world charm and is not as commercialized as it seems. It is a well - organized beach with all leisure facilities. The atmosphere here is much more subdued than most of the other busy resorts in Greece and visitors are able to indulge in all leisure activities at a rather relaxed pace.
The beautiful beach front here is bordered by several restaurants, cafes and hotels. The long rows of sunbathers and the water sport enthusiasts frolicking in the splendid waters makes this beach very attractive and busy. The sun umbrellas, sun beds, surf boards and jet skies are available on hire. The crescent shaped beach that is long and tree-shaded even has a boarded catwalk running along the edge for strollers to enjoy the sea, sun and sand. Both beach lovers and walkers will be spoilt for choice in this beautiful resort.
One of the most frequented beaches, Agios Georgios is crowded closer to the city but becomes less populated away from the suburban area. Although the sand becomes a little gritty further south, it is well compensated by the relative peace and quiet of the place. The best time to visit the beach is in the mornings because as the day advances the beach gets busier especially during mid-day.
The edge of the sea is lined with beach bars, cafes and tavernas that are welcoming and friendly. The traditional tavernas mainly serve Greek food especially freshly caught fish cooked in traditional style with exotic herbs. At Agios Georgios resort facilities like mini markets, laundry, car and motorbike rentals are also available. Some tavernas serve food with the accompaniment of classical Greek music. On the sea front are found accommodation facilities that include hotels, studios, apartments for rent and some lovely holiday homes of the wealthy Athenians.
Situated close to the port, Agios Georgios offers a curious and interesting sight of ferries honking and moving in and out of the port and the huge bow waves that come smashing onto the shores often. The beach offers a good selection of water sports activities including, swimming, water skiing, wind surfing, kayaking etc. Novices to these adventure sports can enroll in the windsurfing school or the kayaking club located here to learn.
